Background

The original concept was to construct a combined ethanol / biogas facility, with the intent to use the electric and thermal energies produced by the biogas system to support the energy needs of the ethanol production facility. Following the drop in the ethanol market, however, the project was scaled back to electrical production from biogas only; and the project was able to secure a contract under the available FiT program. The project development started in 2009 and commissioning was completed in August 2012, due to delays with the utility interconnection to the grid.

What is unique about this project is that Mr. Henrard does not own any livestock. The pig manure he receives is from the neighboring farm.

The system also receives packaged organics from area supermarkets. This material is initially chopped up and then mixed with digestate to make it pumpable before it is passed on to the bioseparator where plastics and other foreign material is removed. The material then goes to the hydrolyzer before it enters the digester.

This process flow not only creates an increased capacity to take in waste, but also provides for greater flexibility in delivery schedules. Meanwhile the supermarkets enjoy the convenience of not having to manually separate the packing from the organics they need to dispose of.

The system’s effluent fertilizer is applied to his cash crop fields.
